FAQs

Do I need to take the NYS Security Guard Training Courses?

New York State requires prerequisite and annual training for the following individuals:

  • New York State Security Officers
  • Armed Security Guards
  • Unarmed Security Guards

Retired law enforcement officers or those who have been deferred after 10 years of service are exempted from these training requirements.

Should I take the Security Guard Training Courses if I have not yet been employed as a security guard?

Absolutely! If you are interested in working in security, completing the 8-Hour Pre-Assignment Course is required by New York State before you can become employed as a security guard.** (The 16-Hour On-the-Job Training Course must be done within 90 days of employment) As some companies will not pay for security training, having the certifications listed on your resume will make you a more desirable candidate, since they will not have to wait for you to complete training before you can start employment.

How much do the NYS Security Guard Training Courses cost?

Pricing for the security courses listed can vary between $50-$200 each, depending on the course. Please visit the course pages at Safety Quest Ltd. for more information on pricing and registration.

If you are a guard agency or company that hires security guards at volume: Please call Safety Quest Ltd. 631-876-5438 or email at [email protected] for more information on large admission rates.

How Do I Register For The Security Guard Training Courses?

In order to take classes at our location in Hauppauge, you must register through Safety Quest Ltd. You can click the SafetyQuest link to view the course calendar and get more courses and payment information, or go back to the top of the page to go to their website.

Do You Provide Job Placement Services?

While we do have connections to security guard agencies throughout the Long Island and New York area, we do not advertise job placement services because we are not a job placement agency and we cannot guarantee job placement for all of our students. Successful employment is based on the individual’s ability, previous experience, and the agencies’ availability and demand. We will take note of exemplary students in our courses for potential future employment and provide letters of recommendations.

Are These Courses Certified by New York State for Security Guard Training?

All of our courses and locations are certified by the NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services under Professional Training Consultants, DBA Safety Quest Ltd. You can view Professional Training Consultants as an approved school from NYS DCJS here on page 43 (45 in the PDF file) All certificates of completion that are provided at the end of our courses are recognized by New York State DCJS and DLS. The instructor at our location, Matthew D. Seifer, is a certified instructor by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services to provide instruction for the security guard training courses. You can view his registered armed guard registration here.

Do I Apply for a Security Guard License or Registration?

This, unfortunately, is a very common misconception and issue with semantics, due in part that the Division of Criminal Justice Services handles training school curriculum and certifications, and the Department of State Division of Licensing Services handles the application and maintains the database of registered individuals. (Doesn’t help that the form says license application and when you go to the DLS search page, it says “Licensee Name Search“) According to the NYS DOS DLS: “Section 89-G of Article 7A requires all persons engaged in security guard activities be registered with the New York Department of State (DOS) and complete all training (unless exempt) at schools approved by the Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS)” When you complete the training requirements and application, you will receive a card that will specify “New York State Security Guard Registration Card” Once you complete your 8-hour pre-assignment security guard training course, apply to register with the NYS DOS DLS, and receive your registration card from New York State, you will be eligible to gain employment in NY as an unarmed security guard. (Note that armed security guards have more training and state requirements than unarmed guards. Please see the NYS DCJS link below for more information. Safety Quest also offers courses for NYS armed security guard training) To summarize: There is no such thing as a New York State security guard license. Receiving training from an approved security guard training school, (which we are, as answered in the previous question) completing the application to NYS DLS, and card you will receive is to be a New York State registered security guard.
